The sculpture will travel to several different venues across our region (please see "tour schedule"), soliciting Silent Auction bids. All monies raised by the sale of the sculpture, and by any monetary contributions supporting our 21 Breast Salute will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure (if making a supporting donation, please note on your contribution, 21 Breast Salute). Neither the artist nor the participants will receive any fee for their participation in creating the sculpture.
The Concept & The Process:
Several of the women who volunteered to participate in this project are breast cancer survivors. Others are friends and family members of those who have battled or are currently battling the disease. It is the goal of each of the 21 to honor a loved one. It is the goal of each of the 21 to find a cure. They are 21 women united.
Each
participant was asked to create a plaster casting of a single breast.
The plaster moulds were then used to create an exact ceramic replica
of the breast. Once the replicas
were fired and glazed, using an array of colors and textures, the 21 pieces were
arranged on a simple, black backboard, arranged in seven rows of three. (Click
here to see the layout design.)
It is not my intention as a professional artist, nor the intentions of any participant, to create a piece that is obscene. We would like viewers to see the sculpture and think “Wow! These ladies mean business!” Twenty-one people coming together, in a combined effort to generate awareness, honor a loved one and join in the fight against breast cancer.
